The PROGRESS Film-Verleih Berlin was the only film distribution company for national and international films in East Germany. PROGRESS also produced their own marketing materials, including the film posters. The posters were created by their in-house art department or commissioned from some of the most important East German graphic artists, including Manfred Bofinger, Helmut Brade, Werner Gottsmann, Erhard Grüttner, Bert Heller, Werner Klemke, Otto Kummert, Paul Rosié, and Klaus Wittkugel. The DEFA-Stiftung holds the rights of all DEFA film posters.
