Notes for the user of the DEFA database

With the help of the following search forms under the menu item "films" it should be easier to find titles in the DEFA film stocks. You can choose between a fast search with one field and an advanced search with several fields.

Fast search
In the field of the fast search you can type in any search term like film titles, production countries, names.

  • Example:
Search: Paul Paula Glatzeder = Die Legende von Paul und Paula (The Legend of Paul und Paula) and other films

Enter the key "search" and the result will be shown. You will get to a detailed filmography of the chosen film by left-clicking with the mouse on the corresponding title.
Your entered words will be marked in yellow.

Advanced search
In the advanced search you have the option to combine four search terms and you can search a specific time period by entering two dates in the fields above the search box.

In the first two fields you have the option to choose among the categories: film title, person and general information. By left-clicking with your mouse on the arrow, you can mark a category in the appearing menu.

In the second field you have the option to limit the chosen category. Left-click with your mouse on the arrow. You can now mark a category in the appearing menu.

The title or the names can be typed in the third field either in lower or upper case letters. All forms of writing will be found. Entering an article in the category original title/archive title is not necessary.

Enter the key "search" and the result will be shown. You will get to a detailed filmography of the chosen film by left-clicking with the mouse on the corresponding title.

Combination of search terms
You can combine four search criteria. The terms will be automatically connected by the boolean operation AND.

  • Example:
    1. Person, Darsteller (actor), Domröse
    2. Person, Regie (direction), Carow
    3. Allgemein (in general), Inhalt (content), Ehe (marriage)
= Die Legende von Paul und Paula (The Legend of Paul und Paula)

You can also limit the search to a certain period or combine it with other search criteria.

Non-search
By adding a minus sign in front of a word you can eliminate it in your search.

Operating with wildcards
If you do not know the correct spelling of a search term you can use the sign * as wildcard

  • Example:
    Maetzig oder Mätzig
    Search: M*tzig

Neither names nor titles can be abbreviated. However, it is possible to enter film titles or names incompletely.

Complex phrases
By adding quote signs you can search for phrases.
We thank you for using our filmograhpic database and wish you a successful search.
